What Squatters?

I was reading Malaysiakini’s report titled “Khalid urged to drop flawed policies” and it was interesting to note that the MB’s decision to carry on the ‘zero squatter policy’ draws more flak.

Council chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, in a two-page statement this evening, said the council was deeply concerned on Khalid’s remark that the latter will continue his predecessor Mohd Khir Toyo’s policy to eradicate all squatter settlements in the state.

I was surprised to hear Ambiga saying that the policy is flawed. It is not. The policy is not flawed but the execution certainly was.

It is not all beautiful and fancy living in squatters – lack facilities, crime and disorganization is the rule of the game. And the implementation of the “zero squatter policy” does not necessary means the use of high handed eviction (something that was so “usual” under Khir Toyo’s reign). We can achieve “zero squatter policy” in many other ways too such as:-

  • Revamping the development of squatters and allow the residents to take up houses after the area has been developed
  • Eviction with proper procedure, compensation and sufficient lee-way so that the residents will take the offer without much resistance
  • Rezoning of areas tagged as squatters and undertakes the modernization effort on these areas together with the residents

The “zero squatter policy” is a good policy – who wants to live in a state full of squatters? It does reflect badly on the government to continue to allow squatters mushroom up in the state and close one eye to it. Does it, Ambiga? And squatter problems are not limited to Malaysia context alone but it is a norm in other countries as well (see Wikipedia entry on this).

Did we try to learn on how to tackle this effectively from other countries? Is high handed treatment the only way in Malaysia?

So until we see how the policy is implemented under the new State Government, we should not be so fast to shoot it down. But what is more important now is whether the State Government will draw a proper guideline on how it plans to execute this policy (which in the past riddled with corruption, high-handed tactics and unfairness).

And also remind the little Napoleons not to repeat their past mistakes when implementing the policy in the past.

And despite the fact that Khalid was “famous” with estate worker eviction when he was head of Guthrie (I was there when estate workers demonstrated in front of SUHAKAM office), I certainly hope things have changed, now that he is under Keadilan.

Focus on that, will you?

If this is not treason on the highest order, I don’t know what it is. Do we have a new Sultan now?

Why this guy is still on the loose? Where is UMNO and its fucking “Ketuanan Melayu” now? Talk so much of defending the Malay rights but conveniently close one eye to the tracery and treason by the Dollah family.

Bloody cowards!

Destroy & Build

Remember this story just before the election?

Fellow blogger, Aarvidi has more on this in his blog and he said in the start:-

This was the first time I was doing an investigating exercise to find out about temples being destroyed at these 2 estates.

With adrenalin pumping into my system, there was I trying to unravel an incident that took place on the eve of Election Day on March 8.

The question is why would someone demolish a temple and then built it again? And that too in a place where there is no other developments (unlike in other places where development is slated on the temple grounds).

Hardly a worthy effort for political mileage…

To People in Puchong

26 March 2008 B.Joe Leave a comment

Ya, to the people who been made as suckers to pay the high toll charges of RM3.20 on daily basis…

In case you have not realised this, Litrak (the people who run LDP across Puchong) have stopped the “road improvement” works. In some places with work half way done. And timely so too – just after the defeat of BN candidate in Puchong? Hmm. So, was the “hard work” before the election was just a gimmick to the people in Puchong to continue to support Barang Naik BN party?

Sigh…

Double Standards, Once Again

(The same old shit from same old mouth foaming politicians)

Hardly caused us to raise our eyebrows these days but still…

BN or rather UMNO were well known for their double standards and we thought after the hard screwing that they got after the last general election; these people would have toned down. But how we were proven to be so wrong?

The hoo-haa that they created when DAP wanted to boycott the swearing in of MB Perak was almost non existence when they wanted to boycott the swearing of the Terengganu MB in the same manner.

And they don’t treat this as treason against the ruler? Or is it because they under immense pressure to ensure that Terengganu’s oil money continues to go into the pockets of a few-well connected rather than the people of Terengganu?

And what is this campaign on-going in Perak by racists calling for review of the Perak Exco membership? The “good for nothing” NGOs (are they?) are up again, playing racial card to say that more of non-Malays in the Perak Exco is bad for the state.

Nonee Ashirin, who is one of the founder members of Perak Pertubuhan Profesional dan Pewaris Bangsa (Prowaris), said the formula did not reflect the composition of the state population with the Malays being the majority.

My question to this Nonee character is “So, what?” Why you are so worried of “Non Malay” Malaysians?

Nonee, do us a big favour and get yourself deported to some “apartheid preferred” country. I am sure they can use your “unique God given talents” there. At the time when we are thinking ourselves as Malaysians first and wants to get this country back on its’ feet and fight in par with other developed countries, the racists in the name of “fairness” wants to bring back the “divide and rule” treatment that has been so entrenched in muddy waters of Malaysian politics.

Will Nonee be making the same “noise” if the Malays find themselves with a better deal with this new Exco? Barely a month have passed by since the voters rejected racial based politicians and the new state Government is set on its’ work, we have people like this Nonee calling for the reinstallation of racial based rule. What’s wrong with these people?

Shouldn’t the formula be based on who got the most votes? Or at least make noise after giving the new state Government the chance to prove themselves? Don’t she get the “message” when majority of Malay in Perak voted for non-Malay candidates?

It looks like it is same rubbish poured in by “concerned” citizens in Selangor but the more they make noise, the hatred most of us are becoming of racial based ruling. The country always comes first…have they forgotten?
